Question: What do you think of raisins, dates and prunes? Good? Bad? Like everyday or as a treat?
Answer: Dried fruit is higher in sugar that regular fruit, and is something that could become bad if it is taken in big amounts, and often. That being said, it is nature’s candy, and offers many nutrients that make it worth having. Not to mention they’re extremely delicious!!! My recommendation is that when you have them, be sure to have them with some protein so it slows down the absorption of the sugars and doesn’t spike your blood sugar like a candy bar would. I love to add raisins into my oatmeal with some nuts, cut some dates up into my salad, or put prunes on top of my spelt cake with peanut butter. A small amount adds up fast in sugars, so be sure not to go overboard with the quantity – 1/4 cup of raisins (29 grams of sugar), dates (29 grams of sugar), dried figs (20 grams of sugar), and dried plums (13 grams of sugar) can range from 110-130 calories, so be mindful when you’re adding them into meals. If done right, it can be such a nice and natural way to sweeten your meals!
