4 Tips to Help with Period Time

Question: I was wondering if you had a meal/ snack suggestions for when you have your period. I find that I am excessively hungry but don’t have junk food cravings so I am still able to eat healthy. Unfortunately what would normally fill me does not, and I am extremely hungry at the 2 hour mark between meals. Is there specific food that would be better to eat at this time of the month?

Answer: Here are my suggestions for period time…..

  • Vitamin B6 – load up on this. Most women are taking a multivitamin which has vitamin B in it, but it is still not enough. The B vitamin can not only help with food cravings, but it can also be very helpful with the different and challenging moods we experience. I swear by Vitamin B6!
  • Healthy Fat. The healthy fat in things like natural nut butters, mixed nuts, seeds, avocados, flaxseed, and salmon can help to keep you satiated. The higher fat content in these foods make it take longer for your body to digest, so you are satisfied for longer. Pair this with some healthy complex carbohydrates and you have yourself a double whammy effect!
  • Protein and Complex Carbs. Obviously you know I am very keen on having balanced meals and snacks throughout your day, but when you’re on your period it is even more important to do so. The combination of protein and complex carbs with your healthy fats really help with your hunger button. Here are a couple of examples of meals/snacks that will help keep you hunger at bay:

Salmon, brown rice, and cooked broccoli
Spinach salad with chicken, chickpeas, avocado, raw veggies, and an oil/vinegar dressing (I love throwing a couple raisins on this salad as well!)
Ezekiel english muffin with a fried egg and feta cheese
Apple with natural peanut butter
Oatmeal with flaxseed, almonds, banana and almond milk
Strawberries with a piece of 80-90% dark chocolate bar and a couple almonds
Nut Thin Crackers with hummus

  • Lastly – drink lots of water! We tend to be more tired and bloated on our periods, so be sure to pound the water all day long so you’re not misinterpreting your tiredness for hunger, and you’re helping to flush out the bloated feeling!

Showing you the difference between liking and loving your body,
